Product Description

The Advanced Elements AdvancedFrame Ultralite Inflatable Kayak is both high performance and incredibly lightweight. Featuring Advanced Elements’ aluminum rib-frame technology for superior hull speed and tracking. With plenty of deck features and a high-back seat, this kayak is ready for your next adventure.

The Advanced Elements AdvancedFrame Ultralite’s hull is constructed from a lighter-weight ripstop material upper with a polyurethane tarpaulin underside. Left and right bladders are also made of a lightweight – yet rugged – polyurethane rather than PVC. Both bladder covers on the AdvancedFrame Ultralite feature open ends without a zipper, allowing the bladders to be pulled out for cleaning or replacement. Instead of the traditional low-pressure PVC floor, the AF Ultralite sports a foam floor similar to that found in the Lagoon series. To compensate, the high-backed seat features a 1.5 inch EVA closed cell foam seat base.

The switch to open bladder cover, foam floor, polyurethane bladders and polyurethane tarpaulin hull provide most of the weight savings, making the AdvancedFrame Ultralite roughly 10 lbs lighter than the Sport, and nearly half the weight of the AdvancedFrame.

Other features include a thin aluminum bar riser and cross bar which together provide a pitched deck, allowing water to run off. A second set of bungee deck lacing is found on the rear deck upper. With that focus on portability, the AdvancedFrame Ultralite also comes with the new Advanced Elements inflatable kayak backpack/duffel bag with removable back straps.

  1. Crazy old Folks

The perfect kayak for old folks and hikers

    Crazy old Folks

We own three hard-plastic kayaks and live on a small lake. It’s easy for us to wheel our kayaks over to the lake. Since we camp in many different states, last year we decided to purchase the AdvancedFrame Ultralite Inflatable Kayak. How much do we like it? We are buying another one this week! I’m 72 and my wife is 67. Instead of trying to figure out how to transport our hard bodies, we can throw the duffel bag in the back of the truck and literally kayak any body of water we can hike to. The inflatable is easy to set up (my wife does it on her own in less than ten minutes). It tracks better that some hard kayaks and performs well in the wind. Yes, the floor is a bit wobbly, but it’s no problem unless you believe a hard floor is an advantage. Some folks complain about the fact that you sit lower than most kayaks. It certainly hasn’t bother either of us and if it is a problem all one has to do is put an additional cushion under your butt. The adjectives that come to mind for this product are: quality, ease of assembly, portability and flat out FUN. Take it from some old geezers who have never had too much fun: this product crashes through the fun barrier.

    Great, sturdy kayak

    Haley R

My husband and I have been kayaking almost every weekend around Montana and I bought the Ultralite looking for a lightweight, quality kayak which I could more easily pack in and out of our mountain lakes and rivers. This kayak did not disappoint. It is easy to assemble, takes less than 15 minutes to get from bag to water and, once on the water, responds very well to my control. I wasn’t sure at first if the lighter weight of the kayak would mean a less durable product, but the Ultralite is a hardy kayak and seems like it’s going to flawlessly withstand shorelines and river-bottoms alike. This kayak is perfect for on-the-go adventuring and I look forward to many years of use.

  3. Robert

Lighter weight kayak for those that can afford it

    Robert

Overall it’s a very convenient inflatable kayak, that still has the low profile and good tracking that comes with the advanced elements models.

It is nice to be able to carry the thing fully inflated on your shoulder with little effort; I’m able to carry it and put the kayak back into the bag in places where it will pick up less dirt and sand rather than right by the shore.
The floor material is noticeably lighter and thinner (supposedly thinner but tougher) than other kayaks they make, which is presumably where they saved most of the weight – I haven’t used it enough to put this to the test yet, but it seems strong so far.
As with any of the advanced elements kayaks, drying them out can be a pain and time consuming; choppy water can make it more necessary, you’ll probably want to leave it out to air dry afterward when you get home.
You will want to buy a pump with a pressure gauge on it so you can set the inflation to the 2psi recommended for optimal performance.
It comes with a foam floor and a seat designed to fit with a foam floor.

For backpacking the bag is a little large and not really designed for backpacking, it can work, but I’d recommend picking up a 100L+ Extra large size backpack made for backpacking if you’re trying to move it long distances.
It is possible to pull the air chambers out and roll them up nicely to fit better in a variety of bags, though the bag still needs to be large.

I am able confirm you can use a sport/advancedframe drop stitch floor with this model (not officially supported), though you may want to get one of their high lumbar seats as well if you go this route – the drop stitch will sit you a little too high, so the back support isn’t as good.
With any of advanced element’s models I recommend upgrading to drop stitch floors, as it will improve performance by 20% in the calm and 30% against the wind (in my own testing) and will feel better to paddle as well.
Unless you absolutely are after lightweight and don’t care too much about performance, I’d recommend getting the sport and a drop stitch floor instead, or get one of the ds packages from another site as it’s a much better value that way.

I also have an expedition elite model and sport, this one is quicker and easier and to set up and just plain simpler with the weight difference – it seems to be the best one from an ease of use standpoint, though the aluminum rib on the top can be tricky to get in right.

  4. oestertinel

lightweight is a question of style

    oestertinel

Since I have been living in the city not owning a car anymore I have been missing kayaking for too long. With the Ultralite Inflatable I can access the waters well away from the next parking and do oneway journeys on rivers much easier without worries about the return transport. The provided duffel bag has ample space for the kayak. I can also fit in the necessary accessories like paddle (if 4piece), life jacket and pump. While it is not even that bulky it is definitely lightweight and can easily be considered for a hike-in. With my 6ft 2in height I was a bit worried if I can sit comfortable. The seat provides ok back support and it can be easily adjusted, but you sit definitely low. Legspace is well sufficient, but due to the inflated tubes it just gets a little tight for the feet all the way upfront. Storage is therefore also limited, though behind the seat you fit in well a midsized bag. Consider that the floor is wabbly. Take care while entering it to avoid flip over. And that makes it definitely also slower than a firm kayak, which is one of the main drawbacks for lightweight.

I haven’t taken the kayak out on the water yet, but I can’t wait to do so. I upgraded from an Intex Challenger and I couldn’t’ be happier so far. It’s super easy to inflate and comfortable to sit it with plenty of legroom. It’s very light and also easy to fold up and put back in the bag. Both of those are key for me because my storage space is limited and I don’t want to be lifting a heavy hard side kayak on to the top of my car. I researched the material and reviews and this one had consistently good ratings for both. When I ordered this kayak, it was on backorder and Sandbay Sports were very helpful with amazing customer service.
